Dear Garden City School Community,

As we head into the long weekend, I want to share a few updates from our district.

Earlier this week, the Board accepted the retirement of our Director of Technology and Innovation, Lauren Maguire. Ms. Maguire has dedicated thirty years to Garden City, serving in various roles as a teacher and supporting students and staff through her work in technology. We are grateful for her thoughtful leadership and for the many contributions.  We wish her a happy and fulfilling retirement. We have begun the search process for her successor.

At this week’s Board meeting, we introduced a proposal for a $15 million bond, focused primarily on improvements at the Middle School. The proposed projects include:

  • Transforming the existing woodshop classrooms into an Innovation Hub.
  • Updating and relocating four sixth-grade science classrooms.
  • Renovating the auditorium including air conditioning and bathrooms outside the cafeteria.
  • Improving athletic facilities with a new turf field, track, and baseball and softball dugouts and bullpens.
  • Adding stadium lighting and cameras at the High School.
The total project cost is approximately $18.5 million, with approximately $3.5 million funded through capital reserves. These projects would address facility needs while creating spaces that support how our students learn, collaborate, and participate in school activities.

Please take some time to review the bond presentation, which is also available on our website. We will dedicate additional Board of Education meetings to discussing the proposed bond and hold community forums on November 3 at 7 p.m. at the High School and virtually on November 24 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. We look forward to our community’s questions and input.

Our next virtual parent workshop is scheduled for October 22nd at noon, with the focus From Reminding to Building Skills: Helping Your Child Develop Executive Function. Many parents will recognize the question behind this session: Why does my child know what they need to do, but still not do it? The workshop will offer practical ways to support organization, time management, getting started, planning, emotional regulation, and follow-through, helping children become more independent while reducing repeated reminders and frustration. The attached flyer includes registration information.

Thank you for your continued partnership and the care you bring to our school community.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Sincerely,

Kusum
